Project Overview

About the Project

VITA is a mobile app designed to make urban gardening simple, intuitive, and empowering for beginners. It guides users step by step through growing their own food, encourages sustainable living, and fosters community connections among urban residents.

The aim was to design an experience that educates without overwhelming, supports consistent engagement, and inspires users to integrate sustainability into their daily lives.

Goals:

  • Create an approachable and confidence-building experience for first-time gardeners

  • Provide structured guidance in a way that feels supportive and easy to follow

  • Foster community through in-app sharing, tips, and user interaction

  • Promote sustainable habits and help increase food resilience in cities

Target Audience

Urban residents with limited gardening experience, including young adults, families, and community members seeking simple, low-barrier ways to grow their own food. The app needed to appeal both to individuals focused on personal wellness and to those motivated by environmental impact.

Challenges

  • Designing an onboarding and learning flow that is intuitive while covering all essential steps

  • Presenting educational content in a clear, uncluttered way to avoid information overload

  • Building community features that feel inviting and encourage active participation

Design Approach

The design process focused on creating a human-centered experience that blends clean, modern visuals with a warm and approachable tone. Research insights informed the high-fidelity prototypes created in Figma. Layouts, interactions, and visual elements were refined through iterative feedback to ensure usability, accessibility, and aesthetic appeal.

Branding

Logo

The VITA logo is geometric, minimal, and approachable. Rather than using literal plant imagery, it reflects the balance and calm focus of growing food. This approach keeps the design timeless and versatile while aligning with the brand’s mission of empowerment through simplicity.

Custom Icon Set

A tailored icon set was developed to represent core features such as planting guides, home setup, community, and messaging. These icons support navigation and reinforce brand consistency throughout the app.

Color & Typography

Color Palette

Two organic shades of green convey freshness, calm, and sustainability. A deep indigo provides contrast, creating a modern and readable interface while connecting visually to the environmental mission.

Typography

Avenir Next Regular was selected for its rounded, modern form. It offers strong readability while maintaining a warm, approachable character, ideal for a learning-focused, supportive app experience.

What Was learned

This project highlighted the role design can play in encouraging environmental awareness and sustainable practices. By making gardening feel accessible and engaging, digital tools like VITA can inspire meaningful real-world action, reconnecting people with nature, promoting food autonomy, and helping build more resilient urban communities.
